Before the 64 however, the company was significantly influenced by the Nazi German
government at the time, who assigned them to design a car for the people, which is in German: a
“Volkswagen”. This resulted in the eventual creation of the original Volkswagen Beetle,
regarded as one of the most successful car designs of all time. In addition, during
World War II, the German government ordered Porsche to build tanks for the
fronts, leading to the Porsche Tiger and a few other successive models.
Success has been natural for Porsche in the 24 hours of Le Mans endurance motorsport
event,
with the team picking up an astonishing 19 wins. In addition Porsche is currently
the
world’s largest racecar manufacturer, with them building 195 cars for
various motorsport events in 2006 alone! One famous Porsche racecar is the 907, built
in 1967. With its new longtail body the 907s reached 302 km/h (190 mph) on the straights!
In modern times, Porsche have been heavily developing their technology, and are now
competing with the likes of Mclaren, Ferrari, Bugatti and Lamborghini in hypercar territory with
their Porsche 918. This is a hybrid vehicle with 2 electric motors which work in
parallel with a V8 engine to produce nearly a massive 900 horsepower.
